TBT – Volleyball

I recently stumbled upon my volleyball recruiting tape. There was a brief moment back in 2012 that I was considering trying my hand at playing professionally in Europe like some of my UCSD teammates. I was also able to dig up (no pun intended) the televised Hawaii match from 2010 as well as my high…

The FinTech Opportunity

Earlier this year, I worked on a small project that involved developing a quick investment thesis. After working in finance for the last five years.there are clearly opportunities in the industry, some of which are being addressed and some of which are just emerging. I particularly like the concept of “frontier forms” of finance (not the official term, but something I coined). In this new low return environment, investors search the for opportunities in new spaces and asset classes.

The paper below was just a quick and dirty research exercise but I think it provides a unique perspective nonetheless. (see the .pdf for references) Enjoy!

The Kaban Dental Group!

Last week I attended my sister Kelly’s white coat ceremony at the Loma Linda School of Dentistry in Southern California. After watching my sister pour so much energy into dental school the last four years, it was a momentous event to see Kelly walk across the stage and put on that coat. My dad also happens…

Throw Back Thursday – Nicaragua 2014 Part 1

After landing at Nicaragua’s humble capital Managua, I exited the airport to find a friendly local holding a sign that said “Mark and Dave’s.” Mark and Dave’s is the all inclusive surf camp established by two Orange County entrepreneurs that I had heard so much about in the months leading up to my decision to…

SF Real Estate Part 2 – Hobart Building

I remember walking Market Street for the first time and thinking “wow that building is striking.” Its appearance especially jumps out at you given the asymmetric design and the Fidelity building that sits modestly next to it. Completed in 1914 by Willis Polk (his work is everywhere in SF!), the Hobart Building is an office space located near Montgomery and Market and…

Squaw Squad

The first time I skied was in Utah at the tender age of 6. The only thing I remember is the ski instructor chaining, yes chaining, the tips of my skis together because I couldn’t properly pizza. For those of you who don’t ski, pizza is ski terminology for “making the shape of a pizza…

SF Real Estate Part 1 – Foundry Square

As an investor and finance professional, I have always been drawn to real estate as an asset class. In a world full of assets and securities that boil down to simply numbers on a screen, real estate is one of the few assets that is truly physical/tangible. You can demolish it, remodel it, build it and…

Warriors Basketball National Mentoring Month

In 2015 I became involved as a mentor with the East Bay College Fund (EBCF), a bay area non-profit that helps resilient public school students, under–represented in higher education, access and succeed in college, expanding their life opportunities. Being a mentor to my friend Oscar (blue jersey) has been a tremendously rewarding experience for me. As a…
